When you do the Debian install, there's the recommended next step. However,
you can choose to do something else at any time (example: you can format all
the partitions, or just one, or, if it's recommending formatting the
partitions, you can choose to set up the network). That's the "multiple
paths." Some systems you follow in a set sequence, and, while you can go
backward & forward in that sequence, you can't skip steps.
