Ahm, what exactly are you referring to by this statement? He said it
was a DOCSIS cable modem. DOCSIS *is* the the standard for Cable
Modem equipment, and *all* vendors are now manufacturing their cable
modem equipment to be compliant with this standard.

The old LanCity cable modems were proprietary, but once cable
companies finish switching over to DOCSIS based networks, they'll be
obsolete, and useless (well, that's not true, I have a pair that make
great book-ends :)

> and the idiotic monopoly situation the government enforces on cable services,

Well, that's a completely different story. By the way, I bet if you
check the contract your town/city has with your cable provider,
you'll find that it is a NON-exclusive contract, and that competition
*can* come into the town. It's just that no one ever realizes that,
and no one (i.e. private citizens) ever approaches the cable board
requesting competition be brought in.

If you don't like M1, then find another cable provider you'd rather
do business with, then call them and ask if they'd be willing to meet
with your town/city's cable board. Then call the town/city hall and
find out when they meet. Show up and introduce the idea of bringing
this new company in for discussions.

>there is a very good
>chance that your modem won't be useful unless you stay within M1's service
>area.

This is only true if the area you move into is non-DOCSIS compliant.
If the area is controlled by a company making the switch to DOCSIS
compliant equipment, then you should be fine. Of course, I'd check
with the new provider to make sure. And you might want to call
several times, on different days, at different times of the day
ensuring that you're getting different people, and they all give you
the same answer :)
