When I started up my cable modem service about two months ago I was
initially interested in purchasing a modem because I hate throwing $ away
leasing / renting anything. However, both the tech who installed the svc
and the sales rep at Best Buy who sold me my Linksys equipment told me the
standards have still not been decided on. Now, I realize the sources are
pretty weak...but because I had been hearing others complain about not being
able to move between companies w/ purchased modems, and the fact that I had
several friends burned by jumping on the 56k bandwagon a little too early, I
had no indications to check deeper. When you say DOCSIS is the standard,
that leads me to believe that *all* cable internet providers will have to
switch over to it...eventually. If they have no reason to, then it is not
so much a standard as a "recommendation." If you have any web references
I'd love to look into this more and maybe pick up one of the $99 modems
myself.
Thanks much, BTW, for the info on cable provider contracts. Again, I had
accepted info from far in the past and never really looked deeply at it. In
all states I have lived in (FL, NE & NH), I have never seen or heard of more
than one provider offering service to a specific area at a time. If company
x offered service, companies y & z would not. I had been told each time by
the company's sales reps that they could not service that area because of
contract limitations. Again, the source is questionable, but your message
is the first time I've heard otherwise. I'd be curious about looking at
this more as well, if you have any pointers (beyond a trip to the town
hall).
