   Bingo.  I think we need to start talking more about open standards.

   A great example is IM programs.  These are increasingly popular with
everyone (half the people at work spend huge amounts of time on them).  My
daughter used to use AIM and I suggested Jabber to her
<http://www.jabber.org>.  She found a animated cartoon version of Jabber
and now had most of her friends using it.  Of course, in this case, the
animated cartoons won them over not the open standards argument.  For
others, when standards are explained and the end-programs roughly
identical, few people see a huge problem in switching.
