I don't *believe* so (anyone better-informed, feel free to correct me).
I seem to recall that the patent-holders for MP3 only ask royalties on
commercially-produced MP3 players, but they *do* get (IIRC) about
US$5.00/ea. commercial player (eg. your Rio 500).
