I have found a great site for finding info on monitors refresh / sync
rates at:
http://wwwinfo.cern.ch/pdp/ose/linux/lsr/pro/RedHat/instimage/usr/X11R6/share/Xconfigurator/MonitorsDB

sorry this link name is so long, but it has proved quite helpful for me,
especially during those interesting X setups with slackware :)
