What are you talking about? The "Balance Sheet" report and the "Income
Statement" (by whatever name) are NOT providing filtering by transaction
because they have nothing to do with transactions. They are reporting
"account balances" and they most certainly do provide for filtering by
account. You can include/exclude accounts from these reports. That's
"filtering" as far as those reports are concerned.

Unfortunately, none of the reports except the Transaction Report support
filtered transactions, and none of the developers have ever commented on
the feasibility of expanding filtering to other reports.
It’s also unfortunate that the Transaction Report with subtotals cannot be
sorted into a P&L report.
