One CANNOT get rid of caste by merely asking the 'upper' caste for their
indulgence and their goodwill. One gets rid of caste by EMPOWERING the 'other
/ lower' castes. This is done through education and economic measures. The
Catholic Church and the government have been in the forefront of this. The
Catholic Church in Goa and India has done a marvelous job on the education
front and through education on the economic front. How many anti-casteists on
this forum supported Bhandorkar's and the Delhi's "land for the tiller"
measures?
One empowers the 'lower' caste by highlighting their achievements. On Goanet, I
read India's first Cardinal was a NON-Bamon. More recently I read a similar
reference to Jack Sequeira. Why this duplicity? Why do the members of this
caste not claim them; and proudly educate us about the success of their other
members ... just like Selma has done. We can leave out the dating scene.:=))
India has had Sudra kings, Presidents, Chief Ministers, Cardinals, Bishops,
etc. etc. It is high time Goans acknowledge the Sudra and other caste
contributions to Goa. I encourage the Sudra and other Goans to take the lead
and educate us about this. THEIR contribution and success is GOAN success and
pride; just like in the case of Cardinal Gracias.
I am no authority on Hinduism or its practices. Yet one way for anti-caste
Hindus to bring down the barriers, is to take along a 'lower caste' Hindu with
them, next time they visit the temple. Or invite them to your house for a meal.
Perhaps a morcha and an entrance into the temples by Hindus of all castes
walking interlocked elbow-in-elbow would be a welcome sight across India. This
would be just like Martin Luther King's desegregation marches. Just some
thoughts for some public action for Hindu Goanetters who are anti-caste. This
would be a little more than mere talking and writing about it.
As far as fighting casteists on this web-forum. Just expose them when they
write posts that enhancing their ego / resume merely by demeaning another Goan
/ institution. That should end the Goenchim xapotam (hollow words and empty
talk).
Kind Regards, GL

But only a casteist would be proud of his "higher" caste.
It would be worthwhile to discuss strategies that any regular individual can
adopt to get rid of caste in his or her own life, and promote caste blindness
in general.
