I have lived in a society where affluence (and wealth) were measured by the
number of cows you owned.
I have lived in a society where affluence was measured by the number of
children you have.
I live in a society were affluence is measured by the quality of life you can
provide your family.
Which reminds me of the old riddle:
Who is happier? The man with twelve children or the man with twelve bars
of gold?
Answer: The man with twelve children does not want more.
