I have read most of the reports posted here regarding the Colva violence.
However, I have not found anything mentioned whether Fr. Diago or any other
priest attached to Our Lady of Merces Church in Colva is living or had lived
with a woman. If a priest is involved in such a relationship, it is a matter of
deep regret. Whether it needs to be publicly exposed is a matter of choice.
From a journalist's point of view, it the exposure of the case serves the
public interest it then the case surely needs to be exposed. If the priest is
living with a woman, then the church authorities must step in and issue a
statement.
I am surprised that no journalist in Goa has done any investigation to find out
what's behind this case. Or, was the journalist who got roughed up doing an
investigation?
If I remember correctly Calvert was part of the cheerleaders group that went to
Delhi with Churchill Alemao when the latter was elected MP. Check the back
issues of The Goan Observer and you will see Calvert's articles. In this age,
anyone who writes a few articles for newspapers, websites or magazines can be
called a journalist. Maybe there are what is now known as "citizen journalists"
but this is a far cry from those who are "professional journalists."
I am also surprised that how the people of Colva elected him to be a panch. The
panchayat politics is altogether a different matter. Numerous cases of how
panchayat members have made money beyound their means of income have come to
light.
Colva is just another case where violence has erupted and perhaps it won't be
the last.
