Have the guys (and gals) in Colva heard of a basic thing called 'Freedom of Speech'? If Calvert whats-his-name has defamed someone either by calumny or detraction, then there are legal remedial measures.
The absurd lengths to which this demo is going on in Colva as seen in the local T. V. Channels is frightening in its intensity and vehemence. I have seen people almost in a frenzy. For the sake of peace and sanity this must stop. There is a bad trend in Goa now a days to block roads and have a bandh for the silliest of reasons. I feel that if the alleged victim of the defamatory CD, who is the parish priest asks the protestors to stand down, then it would have an effect. Also as Selma suggests, if the Bishop who is the head of the catholic church in Goa requests people to back off, it will have the desired effect. It almost seems that the lay leaders in the church are egging on the protestors. Surely, the parish priest has control over these people. Traditionally, Konkani tiatrs, songs and Zagors have been didactic in nature and often try to create social awareness and change and sometimes poke fun at various persons/situations/ institutions etc. If the Colva agitation sets a trend, then I feel that Konkani will be the loser as composers and writers will be muzzled and it (Konkani) will lose some of the richness and earthy flavour it enjoys through the medium of tiatrs and songs. -- Tony de Sa [email protected] M : +91 9975 162 897 Ph. : +91 832 2470 148 ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v
