This problem has been fixed. Even though it looked like we had a CNAME record, somehow it got messed up. It was actually inconsistent in that it sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. I guess some servers had a valid record and some had a bad one or none at all. Eventually the record disappeared completely.
So our hosting service refreshed the CNAME record. Once it had time to propagate, it seemed to start working consistently again.
