I'm not sure there's anything explicit in the current Terms of Use to
forbid DOM removal, but if it becomes a problem, we could certainly
put something about it in the upcoming Terms of Use to make that
clearly forbidden.

Though you (or I) may not agree with the exact
implementation/restriction, you should agree with us trying to make
sure that users aren't using the walking directions information
without knowing about the warning first.
