I was looking at all sorts of complicated things that might be going on,
and it turns out to be really simple:
The yellow box only appears in v2.129 onwards. Now that the server
accepts walking requests, walking directions work in versions from v2.81
to v2.128 without the yellow box.
[For versions between 2.81 and 2.123 you have to use {travelMode:1}
because G_TRAVEL_MODE_WALKING = 1 was only introduced in v2.124]
So if you don't want the yellow box on your walking directions, use a
version below v2.129. At the moment v2 is v2.128e, to v2 gives no yellow
box.
