I think if Horst was online he would be scathing about relying on packet writing but I am no expert. I avoid it because I have ended up losing data with unusable discs in the past. It may be better now.

Peter, Some practices need to do this, but the majority I've seen don't have this problem. I find the advantage of having practices using automated backups with InCD, at a cost small ones will pay, outweighs this occasional issue, as the alternative in this situation has often been no backups or infrequent ones. The worst I've seen is that the disks cease to be re-writeable, so the data isn't lost, and getting the GPs involved to spring for new RW disks periodically is not too much problem. The +RW disks format very quickly with recent versions of InCD. I have plenty of GPs whose backup systems with this method work reliably for comparable periods to other media and regimes.
