That's exactly what I do.  I assume the OS is not entirely happy with DVD
rams.   Interestingly some brands (eg verbatim) seemed to work in the past
but I simply cant pin it down.       Have even updated the multidrive
without success.

John,

I've seen that behaviour with 2000 too. It may mean you do the burns 
from an XP machine over your LAN, for a quiet life.
