We recently moved all path downloaders off our server onto a workstation. It improved the server reliability.

However there was an issue as illustrated by Andrew McIntyre with the server dropping the workstation - Drs soon noticed no path and our IT people sorted it in 5 mins via vnc.

I don't find any of the path companies insist on installing on the server.
I generally nominate a pc,
Everything goes there.

I agree with others like peter M, install as little as possible on the
server.
Healthlink are no worse than any others, Fetch is the worst by a country
mile,
It uses more resources (cpu and ram) than many clinical db's !!!!
QML are on of the best, they insist on a site visit to install.

If you are the IT guy,
And they ask to install onto the server just tell them to piss off.
You will be the bunny onsite at 2am trying to get the crashed server back
up, not them.

Designate a xp pro box for path and install it all there.
Just explain to the doctor the therory of installing as little as possible
on the server,
Then get him to explain to the path company install on the PC or he won't
send them any path.
That seems to bring them into line pretty quick.

Rool on the day where all path comes via either medical objects or
healthlink.
2 simple installs,
Low resource usage
Decent support.

Then maybe we can lock down the outbound firewall ports a bit more :)

Hi all,

What's the score with Pathology download apps?

Is there a reason why each one wants to use their own
proprietary downloader and put their own application within
the supposedly secure area of the practice network?

Healthlink are a smart company, and eClinic has a decent
searchable front-end, but there are SOOOOO many...
