David Chan developed the first version entirely without funding if I remember 
right (I might be mixing things up). But he got funding for professional 
programmers once he had something to show

I lived and worked with them for a week - none of them is in for it just for 
the money. All his professional programmers (at least the ones I had the 
pleasure to meet) are idealists who work for a lot less than they are worth.
