As far as item numbers go, you could substitute a description of the service and the time taken for the item number and let the patient and Medicare haggle over the refund.

shades of my "after hours item number" thread on nat-div a week or two back, where i asked for an auction style response as to what was the most profitable item i could legitimately call a service, where i wanted to bulk bill a personal friend but burn the government as hard as i could go to subsidise racgp "brownie point" bill i had the rots about

the only benefit i see of item numbers is letting me know what the government will pay if i don't issue a private account

otherwise i guess one could charge what they consider appropriate for any service and the descriptor need only say "medical services", but that creates undue hardship for the payer in levering money from the feds

i don't believe there is any legal requirement to use item numbers on any medical accounts, and we do so as the default only to facilitate claiming a rebate... sort of "value adding" to the service by minimising the need to argue with an idiotic system
