Electronic prescribing and dispensing of medicines is being trialed in the Northern Territory in an Australian first.

The trial is a joint initiative of the NT and federal governments and the Top End Division of General Practice.

It is being tested at aged-care facilities, with plans to extend the system to GPs across the territory in the next 18 months.

The system uses electronic signatures and secure encryption to send prescriptions to local pharmacies.

Leonie Katekar from the Top End Division of General Practice says the trial has come at a good time.

"The current system relies on faxes and the postal service," she said.

"It's an extremely inefficient system, which is frustrating for GPs.

"It's frustrating for those that work in aged-care homes, it's frustrating for the people that live there and also for the pharmacists.

"So there are lots of potential benefits in terms of quality and safety improvements."
