Subject: RE: [GPCG_TALK] : Hasta La Vista

Hi Cedric,

I thought that schools and goverment organisations in germany have a goverment directive to move to linux by the end of 20xx. So some PC's might be pre-loaded with "Hasta La Vista" but not all.

The same goverment policy has been adopted by China, India, Brasil, Libia and a few African countries. Now Microsoft marketing machine might not want us to hear about this shift.

I saw a posting last night from a user in Germany. All new PC's in Germany are shipped with Vista (He obviously only talks of buyers buying PC's with Windows).

Seems it may be a worldwide trend and that other 1st world highly developed countries also has no option but Vista.

Cedric,

It has been the practice in the past for major suppliers, such as HP, to make their business desktop and workstation machines also available with the previous version[s] of Windows for their corporate clients, most of whom have an SOE and want to keep it that way. My understanding is that Windows 2000 is still king in that arena.

Also, it is still possible to buy OEM versions of XP and 2000, so if you are having a PC built to specs, you should be able to avoid Vista. I have had customers who bought 2000 this way long after XP came out.

Equally, I'm sure if you go to the likes of Harvey Norman or Office Works, you'll see nothing but Vista, but most of the machines will be consumer-grade anyway.
