For me what is missing is a plain English description of what would be
different for me the patient with my health care, not what would be
different for the physician. For example case studies that showed how a
person's care plan materially changed and saved their life because
information was available which would otherwise not be.

Jon,

I have followed the chequered course of Healthconnect and its predecessors since 2000.

The argument went, over time, something like this:

... We can save XXX lives each year with linked electronic patient records

... We can save $XXX million each year through reduced duplication, etc, etc.

Then in late 2004 Robert Wood, then heading E-Health in DoHA, said:

... HealthConnect as it is currently envisaged will cost many billions of dollars to implement

When I read that statement I believed it was game over, which has proved correct.

A new government may believe in the investment, but the current one doesn't. If the UK system is shown to be saving lives and pounds when it is finally implemented, then a Liberal/national government might also commit the money, but not before.

Then it may be will a political issue because the opposition will be citing reports about actual lives and dollars saved, and the argument, so common in Australian politics, 'if they can do it why can't we?' will apply.
