David.

Criteria usually due to finacial criteria, some due to side-effects, as
well as recommendations by various committees. Inhaled steroids has no
restrictions (except for Pulmicort Respules). What does have a restriction
is long acting Bronchodilators (Oxis, Serevent) and combinations of long
acting Bronchodilators with steroids (Symbicort, Seretide). The patient
scenario I frequently experience has not got Asthma, has never had Asthma.
They go to Dr. Complaining of a 2-3 week cough. Gets given Antibiotics +
Symbicort or Seretide.

I had a seventeen year old boy die of asthma under my care. I now have a low
threshold for prescribing episodic inhaled steroids.

Is the reason for the PBS restriction just on financial criteria?
