Backhoes or tunnels - it was not widely reported as part of this story: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2005/11/02/1130823240833.html but I am told on good authority that two of those cables that can be seen stretching precariously across the hole in this photo: http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2005/11/02/lanecovehole_gallery__470x352.jpg are the two (out of two) main fibre-optic Telstra trunks to Brisbane. Maybe it's just an urban myth but Telstra didn't seem to think so: http://www.smh.com.au/news/breaking/telstra-unsure-of-cable-damage-in-nsw/2005/11/02/1130823247247.html Thus if relying on an Internet-hosted service provider, then redundant Internet connections seem like a good idea. If you are in a coverage area, then a wireless broadband connection from a different carrier for use when your cable modem connection from your prime ISP carrier is down might be a good idea.
