Do you think that GP practices can run the risk that the broadband
connection drops out?
Perhaps it is only going to happen if a backhoe digs up the wrong cable,
and perhaps that is a lesser risk than have a server go down.
Backhoes or tunnels - it was not widely reported as part of this story:
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2005/11/02/1130823240833.html
but I am told on good authority that two of those cables that can be
seen stretching precariously across the hole in this photo:
http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2005/11/02/lanecovehole_gallery__470x352.jpg
are the two (out of two) main fibre-optic Telstra trunks to Brisbane.
Maybe it's just an urban myth but Telstra didn't seem to think so:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/breaking/telstra-unsure-of-cable-damage-in-nsw/2005/11/02/1130823247247.html
Thus if relying on an Internet-hosted service provider, then redundant
Internet connections seem like a good idea. If you are in a coverage
area, then a wireless broadband connection from a different carrier for
use when your cable modem connection from your prime ISP carrier is down
might be a good idea.
Tim,
I like John Mac's response.
Maybe we're just getting a little too work-obsessed. Fortunately, most
things a practice needs are on-site.
ASP has to overcome this issue, plus the whole privacy/security/right to
data if the ASP company fails and how you maintain continuity of care in
that event.
The first issue needs more technology, the second needs more law.
