as Cedric says its easy - On Friday last week I downloaded and updated
our drug database in 20mins total (inlcuding download) all whilst
everybody was working flat out. Try that with MD in whatever flavour
you like.

Last year Frank discussed this issue. He hasn't activated it yet, as has a
few other important things to finish 1st. At present BP has live updates.
We update Server while workstations are using BP. MD3 & 2 can't do it as
all users must log out and then server has to be updated. Also dbf files
can't be updated live. If this takes an hour, nobody can use the program in
that time. With BP one can. Hence "live" updates. Because of live
updates, automatic updates is then easy to implement. At present there
frequently are drug updates monthly (no matter which software you use). For
BP users there is no interuption in workflow. The update occurs while users
are still using the program. Program updates occur less frequently - and
again occurs live. Thus in a large practice the saving in time is
phenominal - and more important, doesn't occur after hours when all the
Doctors has left and some poor person has to stay up till Midnight updating
things. The IT tech also doesn't have to go and look which Dr. didn't log
off - as it doesn't matter. With Broadband we download drug updates and
program updates. I haven't received a CD to update my software for years
(except of course for PS)
Contact me if you need further information on this.
Cedric.

While MD3 (& MD2) have dbf files automatic updating can't occur. So
although you have asked HCN for 3 years, they just can't do automatic
updates - unless they rewrite mD3 & remove dbf files. BP on the other
hand has the ability do do that.
Cedric,
An interesting statement.
Does BP have automatic updating now?
The MD3 DBF files are for things like the drug database and the the
patient education, etc.
As you probably know MD3 has 3 databases. Redmap for the scanned
documents/imported fax files and images, MSSQL for the clinical
database, and /Program Files/HCN/Medical Director/ with its dbf, cdx and
fpt files for the drug database, the patient education, etc. These are
the things that are local to each PC and used to only be changed every
three to four months, or even less
I can drop in a set of dbf, cdx, fpt database files for the patient
education, to provide Patient Ed in languages other than English, so why
not auto-update from a remote server? The server would receive the
updates and piggy-back on the network update to distribute these and
updated program files, etc., surely?
With b/band this stuff could be cached as it is with Windows if you
select the 'download and notify me' option in automatic updates.
Greg
