Last year Frank discussed this issue. He hasn't activated it yet, as has a
few other important things to finish 1st. At present BP has live updates.
We update Server while workstations are using BP. MD3 & 2 can't do it as
all users must log out and then server has to be updated. Also dbf files
can't be updated live. If this takes an hour, nobody can use the program in
that time. With BP one can. Hence "live" updates. Because of live
updates, automatic updates is then easy to implement. At present there
frequently are drug updates monthly (no matter which software you use). For
BP users there is no interuption in workflow. The update occurs while users
are still using the program. Program updates occur less frequently - and
again occurs live. Thus in a large practice the saving in time is
phenominal - and more important, doesn't occur after hours when all the
Doctors has left and some poor person has to stay up till Midnight updating
things. The IT tech also doesn't have to go and look which Dr. didn't log
off - as it doesn't matter. With Broadband we download drug updates and
program updates. I haven't received a CD to update my software for years
(except of course for PS)

Cedric,

Yes that is a better system, and I guess if the rest of the functionality is implemented it presents a challenge to everyone else to match it. Or just HCN?

A six consulting room practice can be updated with MD2 in about an hour.

If HCN move away from CD updates, they may risk the ire of some of their less savvy end-users, who may not have broadband or are just habituated, which I suspect is much less of a problem for BP.

I was always surprised at the low numbers using the web downloads page for MD. then a while back they took off the counter, so its impossible to know how many users are getting patches.

Lots of things become inflexible when you've got the most market share, some for legitimate reasons, some for not so legitimate ones.
