While viewng reports on Madani's release in malayalam visual media certain random thoghts came to my mind.
1. When he was arrested a decade ago, the police highlighted [ or manipulated] one side story; that few Nirodh packets were found!! I remember writing in a college magazine, wherein my demand was that the Govt. should congratulate him. Moralistic left has changed little within this decade. 2.Questions raised by reporters today were unimaginative and showed how far Malayalam media got transformed in the meanwhile. Madani narrated couple of Jail experiences and spoke about the impact of that on him. about a youth who was detained for months for stealing a banana whom he helped etc. Journalists were uninterested to know anything about the person. They were trying their level best to extract at least one controversial statement on CPIM , UDF etc. so that they could live on it for coming week!!!! Madani spoke about his commitment to Dalit- Muslim unity, human rights movements etc. The brutal experiences he has undergone did have a positive effect on him. That resulted from the support given by concerned activists and organisations. But the media and BJP spokesmen appeared to be demanding/ claiming a 'reform' in him through detention. As if he was imprisoned [ illegally] for that!!! The focus of discussion should be the changeless biased Indian state machinary, not transformations in a poor victim. 4. I also remember anti sex racket committee expelling A. Vasu from it for supporting human rights demand for Madani's release. Ajitha and K.T.Kunjhikkannan were behind it, said Vasuettan. [ Now K T Kunjhikkannan write regularly for Deshabhimani weekly. He even referred to a new 'internet opposition ' against great Left govt . in ne of the articles. It might be the first acknowledegemnet of 'green youth's existence in civil society from real world!!] There is 'untouchability' in Kerala's cultural domain. Certain issues and activists are insulted / marginalised through subtle tactics..
