Okay, so I think, well, give it another chance.
And you are right. The problem is exclusively GrowlMail and not Growl.
I reinstalled Growl with no problem. It works wonderfully with Adium.

GrowlMail, however, continues to crash Mail and that's where I really  
need Growl.

Sorry about the "avoid-at-all-costs" comments. I was mad.

Please fix GrowlMail.
And could the next version of Growl Uninstaller check the Library/ 
Bundles for residuals & recommend their removal?

Would have helped.
