Well, you probably have a choice between 10w-40 or 20w-50. The Yamaha specs
call for 10w-40, and your temps do not get too high, so I would probably go
with that. In temps below about 60, I usually let the bike warm for a few
minutes before I start off. I probably add about 1-2 minutes for each 10
degree drop in temp, such as 1 minute warm up at 60, 2-3 minutes at 50, 4-6
minutes at 40 etc. That is me just being paranoid. I also take it easy on
all engines until they are warmed up. You can cause a lot of wear and tear
by getting on it hard on a cold engine. (that goes for pretty much any
engine of any type).
Now, I do not have any scientific info to back up my cold engine/warmup
cycle, just seems to be based on past experience and common sense. Its not
like the oil is like jelly, it more like the piston wall/pistons need to
come up to temp so that the piston to wall clearence is wear it should be.
A cold engine has larger clearence, and running it hard like that causes
excessive wear.

What wt. would listers recommend for the San Francisco area. I commute
daily
on my GTS year round in temps from a low of 40 on a winter morning to 80 or
so on a hot summer day.
