The 10w-40 oil problems was because the oil was not getting to the lifters
and bearings fast enough on cold-startup. So you tended to get a diesel
sounding knock, which is bad for both parts if it happens too frequently.

I had a tech bulleten from GM that explained this sort of thing happening
on 454 and 502 engines, and advised against the use of 10w-40 and 20w-50 on
street 454's, and not to use 20w-50, 20w-40, 40w, 50w etc. on 502's unless
it was a purpose built marine 502 (as opposed to the street 502 crate
engine).

Funny, b/c wasn't GM the one who started this stuff?
Ever notice you cant use 10-40 oil in a lot of GM
engines because it will make them knock? I've never
understood that one either.
