>From the various sources I have found, the best filters across the board are

Amsoil (made by Hastings to Amsoil specs) rated 94 out of 100
Mobil 1 (made by Champion Labs to Mobil's specs) rated 92 out of 100
Pure 1 (Purolator) rated 90 out of 100
Hastings (made by them) rated 86 " "

AC Delco (made by Champion Labs, but not sure) rated 86 out of 100

Fram, Lee, Dutsch (sic?) were pronounced crap (relatively) by a number of
places. Purolator was better on the low-cost filters, so was AC Delco.

There was a guy to did a followup study to the one guy on the Dodge
website, but it was only up for about 1 month, then disappeared without a
trace. Thats were I got the numbers from.

Also, there was a paper on the SAE website that I got bootleg copy of, but
I cannot find it now, that talked about the test standards and a
non-comprehensive sample of various manufacturers. It sort of backed up the
above info, but was not oriented towards the best brand, but rather the
various testing methods. I sure wish I could find that stuff now.

I've cut into my old filters and have found that the
OEM looks as good as my boat's Pure One or equivalent.
If you examine the outside as well, there are NO
comparisons in quality--much more grip length and
tighter diameter tolerance. These might have been the
lowest bidder or maybe they reduced cost with a
long-term partnership with Yamaha and others who rely
on quality...
