This one is for all you with high mileage GTS1000 and any Yamaha mechanics:

What's with the ultra short maintenance intervals in the GTS? Every 3800 miles the
maintenance schedule calls for an
incredible amount of stuff to check. My CBR929RR has maintenance intervals for the
same things at 8000 miles (and in some
cases 16000 miles). I'm generally one two follow this stuff religiously, but this is a
lot of work if you do it to a tee. The
maintenance intervals are also short considering that this bike is a sports-tourer. On
top of that, certain maintenance items
are called for at odd intervals. For instance you do all the level 1 maintenance at
23400 miles, a valve adjustment at 26600
miles than a level 2 maintenance at 27200 miles. Of course any reasonable human being
will combine the last two, but it is
bizarre that Yamaha has such odd intervals. If you then turn a few pages in the repair
manual (page 3-5), the CDN, AUS, and
NZ maintenance schedule is a sensible one with intervals at 4000 and 8000 miles.

My question to you high mileage guys and Yamaha mechanics out there is this: What are
you guys actually doing for
maintenance? Are you following the schedule or letting a few things go and keying the
most important areas (ABS, front
swing arm bearings)? What items have failed due to lack of maintenance?
