No, all the oil should not drain out.  The oil filter will drain it's load and some 
extra will come out from the oil lines, but the
crankcase oil doesn't drain out.  I simply remove the oil filter, wait for the oil to 
quit running back from the oil lines.  While
I wait I prefill the new filter with new oil.  Wipe the mating surface on the engine 
clean with a clean rag, oil the o-ring on the
new filter and spin on hand snug.  I check the site glass to see that the oil is up to 
the top of the site glass (on the GTS, other
bikes are different.)  I then start the bike while watching the site glass.  I am 
looking for the oil level to drop enough to give
me a slight "bubble" similar to the site glass in a brake fluid reservoir.  I have 
found that this oil height will keep me from
seeing the oil light come on when sustaining higher RPMS. (not that I ride that way, 
but occasionally the bike will see 10K.)
