Well, if you believe the Amsoil liturature, they try to formulate the oil's
so that they will last longer. Base oils, additives, etc. are all choosen
to make the oil live a long time. Personally, I believe it, but I dont try
to convince other people since it is such a hard sell.
I have oil analysis done on a Honda Civic (94) on both Mobil 1 (5w-30) and
Amsoil 5w-30 (the regular stuff, not the Series 2000/3000 which is more
expensive). The wear metals were a little less on the Amsoil, but I dont
think it was enough of a difference to really matter. However, the oil
retained more of its additive protection than the Mobil 1. So while the
Mobil would be fine to go 6-8k miles, the Amsoil looked like it would go
15-20k miles based on oxidation, viscosity, etc. I think I have the oil
analysis reports somewhere, if you are interested I will post them.
The problem with Amsoil is that unless you are a dealer, or know a dealer,
it is tough to find. I got my dealership via Vic Sledzinski at
www.syntheticlubes.com .
What really interests me would be a test on Motul. I have some good
sources that tell me it is the same stuff as Mobil 1 15w-50 except with
about 5% more zinc, which I dont think is much of a difference except to
your catalytic converter. Zinc is very bad for cats.

The comparisons between the two oils Amsoil and Mobil 1 show that Amsoil
is a better oil. Plain and simple. It doesn't seem to hold up as
long. Might be interesting to do a run on the regular Mobil 1 and then
compare it to a run of the motorcycle specific Mobil 1.
