I don't think that an inch is enough either .

It's all down to angles , when the driveshaft , the swing arm pivot and the
rear axle are in line with each other , the chain is then at it's longest
possible stretch .
At it's longest stretch , i'd be looking for a small amount of free play ,
about half an inch .

The way i'd do it , is to have the rider and pillion sat on the bike , then
get someone to check that you have a small amount of play in the longest run
of the chain , i'd be looking for about half an inch myself .
Make sure you don't have a tight spot in the chain , if you do have one then
you should set your chain slack from it .
