Hi all, The familiar thread of air filters has reason again!
I culled through my archives and this is what I have, (apologies for the length, but I didn't want to have to repost, if someone would just put it on a websi....<ahem, cough, cough>; BYW, this are 'snippets' from posts and have been plagerized without guilt or remorse. If anyone needs to be recognized for their contribution, please stand up and bang your own drum. Here they are, in no particular order..... ----------------------- OK gang, the K&N filters I installed on my GTS have a part number of D035B4 and they are oval shape. There is a number on the bottom as well and it is F018G4. I think you should have no problems in ordering them and they fit like a glove. BTW don't forget to order the breather filter as well. Now they also make a round filter that fits equally well, I have seen it but it is smaller & I don't have the part number so simply call K&N & ask which round filter has the throat dimension of the above oval one. ---------- Yesterday I installed a foam air filter, and got rid of the 11 lb. stock air box. It works very well. Seems to have more power. Plus, with the air box out of the way I have more room to work on the motor. The filter I used is a UNI FILTER. (UP-4182 POD FILTER 1 3/4" ID X 4" HGT). ------------ the part number for the K&N filters are RU 2450. (You wil need 4) That is the number on the box. I have had them on for about a year and a half now. Clean these filters once a year, or every 10,000 miles. My filters have not gotten very dirty in that time. Make sure that you use the K&N filter oil, it picks up the dirt with restricting the filter. -------- The correct K&N filter part number is RU-2450 The code F108G4 is stamped on the bottom of the filter. -------- I drilled a series (7 ) holes about a quarter inch in from the edge of the outside curve of the filter and used screws to curve the filter (since it doesnt exactly match the contour of the curve). After i siliconed up all that was neccessary and gave time to dry, I pulled out the screws and replaced them w/ rivets. These are beautiful filters. ------------ For those interested in K&N filters just remember to visit http://www.gentei.org/~itoh036/036gts/knfilter/index.html I did it last week. Dont panic when realize that YA-1098 is not the one in the pics, it fits. ------------ OK, after getting the first one apart and having a good look at the glue that was used, I decided that I would place the second filter in the freezer for a few minutes. That made the glue more brittle and the second filter came apart quite easily with a tap from a screwdriver handle. Now comes the fun part, cutting up and fitting the new K&N. Actually, the pictures I saw showed cutting the rubber ends off of the K&N???? But now that I've taken the old ones apart and I've checked the width, I think that the K&N will fit just perfect with the rubber ends left on (and less work too). Think they used another model of K&N. I like being able to leave the rubber seals on because the wire and cloth filter is actually moulded into the rubber, and it will be easy to seal to the plastic sides with some silicone. I'll have to finish it on another night though. ---------------- The part number for the K & N rubber top oval filter is RU-2450. ------- Well, since you've brought it up.... redundant, yes, back in Feb.... But I finally changed my filters. I opted for the direct replacement, in the airbox. You need the R1 K&N filter, #YA-1098. Disassemble the stock paper filters, cut the K&N to length, glue back into place w/ silicone sealant (or "Goop"), and you're all set. The width is perfect, and there's enough to make both filters w/ about three inches of material to spare. Parts Unlimited #YA-0089 - retails for $60.95 through Parts Unlimited, I can get it for anyone for $51.80 + ship. K&N number is #YA-1098 (no, not a typo, why they switched the numbers, I don't know).
