I've just done my conversion to K&N. I trawled the archives, including the
link to Japanese website; then plucked up courage to start work!
I bought the R1 filter - YA-1098 - 37 GBP - nice surprise!  (54.30 USD;
59.20 Euros)
Followed the advice to put existing filters in freezer for a while - good
move! Took a little time working out what the joins were, then prised
plastic apart - quite easy really.
Then cleaned up all plastic, getting rid of old glue/sealant stuff - put
them in hot water this time - came off easily.
I then cut the K&N in half - across the short edge - starting at where the
metal plate is. I then cut 2 pieces to match the length of the existing
filters. I finished off the edges where I cut as this was ragged.
I then used modeling knife to trim the rubber - the outside edges were
raised, so by trimming these off the rubber had a nice flat 'face' for
fitting.
I then fixed sealant on the plastic bit, and re-fitted, moulding the K&N to
match the rounded ends of the casing. This bit isn't perfect - but then it
will be covered up, anyway.
I fixed rubber bands round to hold whilst sealant sets off.
I've just done this today - about 2 hours work + setting time.
