A few comments ... * The question of gas turbines vs. diesel should be stated as "all other things being equal, ...", but all other things are not equal in historical cases.
* The US hasn't directly fought another superpower since Korea. It also hasn't seriously mobilized for war and war production since WWII, which many of its second- or third-rate enemies have done, so that MIGHT even out. * The US military system tries to play on American strength and to downplay American weakness. They'd rather spend steel and oil than blood, if they can help it. If that works out, more power to them. If not, those are the breaks. * You might note that other major powers did not opt for the turbine. Are they unwilling to spend as much treasure as the Americans to provide the best possible gear and save their troops, or do they have a clue what they are doing? * I think Clancy quoted some US general to the effect that they could have won the '91 Gulf War if they had used the T-72 and the Iraqis had used the M1, because the US troops were that much better. * If you look for future battles involving the M1 against other modern MBTs, just consider who has been buying the Abrams lately ... Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia.
