* I don't know the DR of a modern carrier, but looking at WWII for a gut feeling, it will be less than DR 1,400, so the kinetic part of the attack goes through to turn
the remainder into an internal explosion.
It'll be nowhere near DR1400, given that that's the equivalent of 20" of RHA. That's the sort of protection you only found on battleships, and even then only over a few vital spots.

* Proper fire suppression is critical. This is a case of one bug in the system countering another -- fire is too
  lethal and firefighting too easy.

I'd say more that fires are too lethal for their size, and that serious attacks don't start enough fires. Also, the fire fighting systems (especially suppression systems) don't suffer from trying to put out fires in a damaged area. One of the reasons warships have damage control teams is because often to get to the serious damage that needs repairing (or the fires before they get too big) you have to work your way through hatches that have wedged shut because of warping, compartments that are filled with clutter, and past bulkheads and decks that have simply been wreaked and twisted so that they have to be bent out of the way, cut out, or another route found. Even 5% of the HP of a ship the size of a supercarrier is a *lot* of damage and destruction.
