Real subs filled their fuel tanks empy volume with water.
One other thing that hasn't been mentioned is detachable ballast tank.
Some that has most of its volume as inflatable hull; deflate to
submerge, inflate (or abandon) to float detach to fly. Might not work
for all campaigns of cours.
