Hello Mike,

as a freighter, the Serenity went to places where they could
find customers. That means frontier landing fields without a
proper orbital infrastructure. Ports with decent facilities
(orbital docking stations, regular shuttle servive) would ask
too many questions about ID and freight papers.

In my case, I'm looking for a ship which is based in a very
civilized port (since frontier colonies wouldn't have much
time for pure science). It might operate in frontier areas,
where the new discoveries are, but does it have to land on a
planet?

If a planetary colony discovers alien ruins, the science team
will look at their grant money and travel in a regular liner.
Only finds in deep space would require a science ship.

Regards,
Onno
