Well, if the university or research foundation or government laboratory
owns a research ship that is mostly useful for deep space, wouldn't they
*also* use it to transport the research team and their equipment for
planet-side finds?

Otherwise the ship is sitting around idle when it could be working,
assuming that there aren't multiple research sites, of course.

Plus, a find might be made on a planet without a breathable atmosphere.
In that case, it would be almost like a deep space effort.
