Going back to the days of sail.
Marines manned at least one of the ships guns, or why the Marine NCO in
charge was a "Gunnery Sergeant" is likely from those times. Naval ranks
often being like "Gunner Mate" and like by their profession/rating.
To provide security for the captain be it to keep the crew in line, to
repeal boarders and to provide protection for shore parties.
So yes, detachment is based on ship size and needs.
3rd Lieutenant a rank much like the current Warrant Officer, to give the
often contracted civilian purser a rank so if captured, they was treated
like an officer and not like a lowly enlisted person.

What is the right size for the battlesuited Marine detachment on a
starship?
This really depends on the ship's mission.
* Traveller had squad-sized detachments on some ships. I don't recall if
the type was specified, maybe Patrol Cruisers?
The 400 ton Patrol Cruisers were anti-piracy. The 1,250 ton Frontier
Cruisers were a bit more general purpose.
* How many Marines in one place do you need for proper training and
administration?
Really depends on how long the Marines are kept on ship. If they are rotated
to ground bases often enough, training can mostly be handled there.
Small detatchments can rely on the ship's administration structure.
* How would three Marine platoons from three different ships have to be
organized so that they can form an effective company?
Best guess: most senior platoon CO takes charge, with his XO or senior NCO
taking command of his platoon. He would pull men from the three platoons and
ships to fill out his HQ section (ship crew used this way are normally
predetermined).
The headquarters
and specialists would have to integrate -- three corpsmen and no
surgeon?
I would guess probably the most junior (not senior) doctor on the three
ships would accompany the Marines.
Would company and battalion officers ship out with the
platoons, in the hope that any random assembly of shipboard platoons
has a few senior officers to run the show?
I think if the Marines were expected to deploy in company or battalion-sized
force (rather than an ad hoc operation) company HQ would be on the ship with
any additional company assets and battalion HQ on a ship with other
battalion assets.
Or the entire unit is loaded onto one larger ship.
What is the right size for a dropship/shuttle?
It should be able to carry at least one squad/vehicle, more likely two.
* If there are two or three people in each shuttle, what percentage of
the total manpower are crew? Twenty percent? Ten percent? Is that too
much?
Anyone not a Marine is a shuttle crewman. I don't understand your point.
* In the real world, amphibian crews are Marines, landing craft crews
are Navy, right?
Yes. Although Marines often operate their own close support aircraft instead
of relying on the Navy.
On a different note, would a battlesuit unit need battlesuit recovery
vehicles?
Probably, but this could be as simple as a hovercraft with a flatbed cargo
area and A-frame. Note i'd use this to get a suit, empty or occupied, to a
rear area. I would not have a medic try to fight through a battlesuit to
treat the soldier inside.
(doesn't Mecha have a medpack you can put in a battlesuit, or am I thinking
of another game?)
Are those other suits or wheeled/tracked/grav vehicles?
Battlesuits with free hands can move around damaged battlesuits.
