Depends on how you train your NCOs, too. But if an officer's 
commission means extra authority, a starship should have one
plus a spare and not just one. You can't get fresh ones from
the regimental staff if those are lightyears away.

Micromanaging from back home might be impossible without FTL
communications.

Is a dropship more like an AAV or more like a LCVP? The AAV 
can stay with the Marines as they move inland.
