It would be a very non standard campain, but i think in principle it can
work. In most campains pcs risk their lives only in a technical sense, but
can trust that they don't permanently die because of a missed roll, or one
bad plan.
A drone operator campain, where if they mess up, they have to explain the
loss of the drone to their commanding officer can be much harsher from a
player perspective, then a campain, where if they mess up, the GM wings
something so the pcs stay alive.
Sure drone operator is not very glorious. But you can build a pc around
the unthanked hero stereotype as well.
