While technically he is a drone operator, there are large differences to
drone operations as discussed in this thread (at least how i understood
it).

The original mission of the drone is diplomacy and espionage not combat.

A common use for modern drones is obervation and intelligence gathering.

Most stories that come to mind where such drones play a role, center either on the people, who interpret the intelligence gathered, or on the people observed, rather then on the operation of drones.

Or you have stories about drone operators, who become heros, by doing something more then only operating drones.

The drone is not replaceable and he gets great personal attachment to it.

We don't have bioroid drones yet. When we do, I expect operators to get
attached to them.

The actual villians are thoose, who supplied the drone and keep his body.

I'm not sure if this is relevant.

It creates personal danger for the drone operator, which is an easy way to make plots thrilling, but also it is, what drones were designed to avoid.

So overall, combat operation with a replaceable drone, that would be what
this thread discussed, does not really play a part in the movie.

Disposable fighting drones are reslly just a limited group of a much larger set.

My original post was in response to a ultratech soldier vs drone discussion. Thus my focus on disposable combat (and to lesser degree intelligence) drones.

Other types of drones that open other professions to be potentially remote controlled need to be considered seperatly.
