Say you have a scoutship with three nautical officers (captain, mate,
engineer), three senior spacers (bridge watchstander, engine
watchstander, cook/purser), three junior spacers, three scientists,
three lab assistants, and three interns, plus surge capacity for two
more scientists. Translating that into the Navsea manual, that means
1 Captain
5 other officers (plus 2 surge)
1 senior CPO
5 other CPOs
6 enlisted
With the low totals, I'll ignore the requirement for class segregation
and I will round only after addition. According to section 3.2, there
could be
1 single stateroom (CO, at least 45 sf)
1 single stateroom (XO, at least 35 sf)
2 double staterooms (one officer/scientist plus surge, at least 40 sf)
2 double staterooms (two officers/scientists, at least 40 sf)
1 single stateroom (bosun, at least 30 sf)
Then there are a total of 11 bunks for chiefs/lab assistants and
spacers/interns. Desegregated, I'll make that one triple bunkroom
(three-high berth, 30 sf?) and two quadruple bunkrooms (two-high berths,
40 sf?).
There are approx. 40 cf stowage per stateroom bunk (360 cf total) and
approx. 20 cf per bunkroom bunk (220 cf total). This is well over the
fifty pounds which are included "for free" in the Vehicles rules. Space
suits may be stowed in the crew compartment, but like the lab space
they're not part of these calculations.
The CO gets a private T/S, the other staterooms share three semi-private
TS, and rounding boldly there are two for the chiefs and enlisted. 40 sf
each?
There messroom(s) will require approx 11.4 seats. In theory, five for
the officers, five for the chiefs, two for the spacers. About as much
wardroom and lounge space, which may be combined with the messrooms. The
formula was written for larger ships, so I'll combine them. Call it 15
sf each, total 180 sf?
Fitness facilities are mounted in an open or multipurpose space, perhaps
the space suit locker room. Just glancing over section 3.6, I allocate
100 sf. 4 feet of shelving for reading materials, but that 21st century
requirement will be handled by computers.
1 clothes washer, 1 dryer, 1 ironing board. 25 sf?
The medical spaces will be handled by an automed.
I'm getting 925 sf total floor space, or perhaps more. The deck height
should be at least 6.5', but I'll calculate with 8' so people in space
suits don't have to worry about bashing their helmet. 7,400 cf excluding
corridors. How much does that add? 30%? 50%?
With the Vehicles rules, you could read that as 7 luxury cabins and 6
normal cabins, plus a 12-person mess/bar and 580 cf of cargo, total
11,780 cf. That would mean interpreting a four-berth bunkroom as a suite
of two normal cabins, which makes sense if you compare "bunks" on a 21st
century warship with "bunks" on a 20st century sub or in a 19th century
steam ship.
What do you think?
Regards,
Onno
