The argument has been made that screen readers need 64 bit versions of their software yesterday because employers are going to be moving to them and blind folks won't be able to get jobs if they can't access 64 bit Windows. Well, folks, let's wake up and smell the roses... With the economy in the pits, and employers laying off workers because they are loosing money you are not going to see businesses going out and buying many new computers, or upgrading their systems to 64 bit operating systems.

The fact is that one of the first places that businesses will trim budgets and delay purchasing new equipment, hiring workers and upgrading software is the computer department or computers for anybody in the company. If they can get by with what they have they are not going to make the change.

The fact is that very few businesses have moved to Vista, even fewer have moved to 64 bit desktop machines and operating systems. You may see Vista and 64 bit technology being pushed in retail stores because retail stores want to convince you that you need the latest and the greatest. But, folks, that is not where business is and not where it is likely to be until there is a huge turn around in the economy.

And, lastly, I have to believe that sales of screen reader software have to be down, and not going to improve much when the state agencies are getting their funds cut drastically. So, let's let the developers and management at GW decide what is the most important things to concentrate on for now, and quit worrying that Window-Eyes is going to become a third rate or worse screen reader if it doesn't have 64 bit Windows support in the next 6 months or less.

When you say 64bit machine. You need to make a distinction between 64bit hardware and 64 bit OS.. 32 bit OS will run just fine on 64 bit hardware. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry Naessens" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Yes, when shopping for a computer you do need to make sure that you aren't
getting a 64 bit machine. Here in canada, when I was looking at the
computers offered by Future Shop, (a major chain,) all of the laptops that
they showed me were 64 bit machines. I was actually quite surprised at the
extent to which new machines emphasized 64 bit systems. To me, this
indicated the importance of 64 bit compatibility for screen readers.

For those who are required to use a 64 bit system for work, the only screen
reader that I know of which offers it is System Access. I have never used
that program with a 64 bit machine, so this is absolutely not an
endorsement, but it is a direction that a person who is caught in the
squeeze could investigate while waiting for Window-Eyes to offer 64 bit
accessibility.

Hello.
Someone mentioned support for 64 bit.
Is it getting to the point now where if you go to some of these department
stores or best buy stores or stores like that you have to double check to
see if the computer your buying is running 64 bit or 32 bit?
I know one thing if there is a company running 64 bit software that nocks
a
blind person right out of a job just simply because they can't use the 64
bit operating system.
That would be ashamed.
Who knows the system and applications could be 100 percent accessible that
is if you had a screen reader that worked with a 64 bit system.
I don't mean to sound pessimistic but any more I just can't help it.
Some times it is vary discouraging.
By the way the other big screen reader don't support 64 bit either.
Tracy Son.

view.
II agree taht the person who is working on java with a script is great
news.
But, what about the 4 issues we mentioned ... can you comment on them?

2. You already answered the java issue.

Hi, Sam. With all due respect, many comments were made regarding
requests
and suggestions for scripts. Was I one of the people who suggested
scripts?
Nope, but what a powerful tool indeed.
As Aaron said, stay uned, smile. Some enterprising author is working on
a
script for java support. I do agree with Cory and hope that a script can
be
incorporated into future versions of Window-eyes.
I responded privately to one of the members of this list for what I
considered to be an unnecessary comment for everybody to read on such a
list
as this.
