Depending on the placement of the keys, it's not too bad actually. With
the left hand I can hold down fn-key, plus control-shift-wwhatever. With
the right hand I can use the embedded numberpad. Also, there is a
current work-around in that you can remap the caps lock key to act like
an insert key. If we just add a caps lock as a key modifier we need to
consider other possible negative affects due to having a keyboard driver
added to the mix.
Also, for those who don't want to modify the keys via 3rd party
applications such as auto hot key, one can always get a folding
keyboard. i have a tri-fold keyboard that when extended, is the size of
a full keyboard, complete with number pad. There are external number
pads, and there are other things one can choose or choose not to use
depending on their personal tastes.
Hope this helps.

Yes!
The one I'm thinking of was a 9 pounder, meant as a desktop replacement.
I guess you could mail-order a large enough bag, but what about ordering
a new shoulder socket? ;)
I know the strong desire, especially amongst less experienced computer
users, for the numeric pad. However, even though someone mentioned a
few more (the Asus and Acer I think), it's unlikely you'll get to
examine them first, so I think a full keyboard is out of reasonable
consideration when buying a laptop.
I think the jaws way of handling a laptop keyboard is so much better, so
all I can do is try to convince GW that many more units being sold today
are laptops, and so they need to put some effort into supporting
capslock as a modifier, instead of their current scheme.
It's not only that jaws allows capslock; it's that they don't use 3 key
combinations,
and then tell you if you can't hit insert (or don't have a numeric pad)
then use the fn key of your laptop making a total of 4 keys at once to
be pressed! :( This is slow and awkward when you can do it at all).
So, I've just argued against a full keyboard, and using either the
window eyes desktop layout (or it's laptop layout either; those
arguments are in previous messages, but I find the laptop layout even
worse than the desktop layout with the fn key). So, the only answer I
see is either an external keypad if window eyes is your screen reader,
or convince GW to rewrite this part of window eyes to better accomodate
laptops.
If you do go for the external numeric pad, try and find one that clips
to the laptop, or otherwise is suported by it; otherwise, you really
can't use it from your lap. I did have a thinkpad that allowed the
external numeric pad to "pop out" of the right side of the laptop, but
they don't make them any longer. I'm hoping someone has figured out a
solution to the numeric pads for laptops, and has a way to have it
supported by the laptop. If I have time I'll go searching.

Chip,
One consideration we forgot to mention is the weight. The HP
Pavilian was a
real arm breaker to carry <G>> Other than that, the battery
life was a
little less. The other problem I had was finding a sholder
bag to fit the
wider unit.

That's great, and thanks for mentioning them.
My other concern, is that the time I saw a full keyboard on a
laptop, it had
a high res 17 or larger screen, and was very expensive, and
used a great
deal of battery, because of the screen. It was the size of
the screen, I
think, which allowed them to fit a full keyboard into the
case. So, asking
for a full keyboard one has to be careful as to what else you
may be getting
and paying for, or looking at what they had to cut to get it to fit.

Chip,
Good point about what keys may be missing on a 15x inch laptop with
full keyboards including the number pad. And battery life
is always
important as well. However I know that both the Asus and the Acer
have such a configurations.

Lenovo made some under the thinkpad brand, but I'm sure

You should check out the expected battery life. The full-sized
keyboards usually came on pcs with a short battery life
because they
were large, and I guess high performance desktop
replacements. 15 inch
sounds like a good screen size though.
The other things to checkout is the placement of the arrow
keys, the six
pack keys, and the modifiers to see that they are on both
sides of the
keyboard. Make sure they didn't get the room for the
numeric pad by
shorting you these various keys.

Hello to the list I was wondering if any one has come
across any
15 inch laptops with 101 full sized keyboard with integrated
numeric keypad , that would work really wel with
WE and nto having ot carry an external key pad. I came
across one the other day at office depot by Hp and I am a bit
amazed but not sure to make the purchase it does not come with
firewire but comes with us, a full sized keyboard with
integrated
numeric keypad. It is the hp g60-230 and it can be had
for about
$650. It has 3 GB of ram, vista 32 and 320 gb hard drive
with duel
core 4200 2.0 GHz processor with 1mb of cashe. If that is a
good deal, and if I should take a look at it wwhihc would make
life eeasier with WE, any help to any one. I may
consider this one
if anyone on the list can give me anything better then this one
for the price point that I am looking at which is in
the $600 to
$800 price range no more than that since that is what I
can afford
at the moment. Thanks for any considerations.
